Two Police Teams Deployed To Probe Death Of Ranga Rajapaksa

COLOMBO (News 1st): Two police teams have been deployed to investigate the death of Acting Director of the Department of External Resources at the Ministry of Finance, Ranga Rajapaksa, who had been suspended in connection with the theft of 2.5 million US dollars from the Treasury by cybercriminals, according to Priyantha Weerasuriya.

The two police teams have been deployed under the supervision of two Chief Police Inspectors.

Ranga Rajapaksa’s body was found behind his garden in Kuliyapitiya yesterday afternoon.

Initial investigations have revealed that he had gone behind his garden at around 10 a.m., and his body was discovered at around 2 p.m.

Police said there was a deep cut on his leg.

The Criminal Investigation Department had recorded statements from Ranga Rajapaksa on three occasions in connection with the Treasury funds theft by cybercriminals.

The statements were taken once while he was in service and on two other occasions while he was under suspension.

Following the submission of preliminary investigation reports to court, a foreign travel ban had been imposed on him.

Ranga Rajapaksa was 50 years old and a father of two.

The post-mortem examination into the death is scheduled to be held at the Kuliyapitiya Hospital today.
