COLOMBO (News 1st); Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said that its warning about targeting power plants was intended to deter attacks by the United States, pushing back against what it described as false claims that Tehran plans to destroy water desalination plants in the Gulf region, according to Al Jazeera.

The IRGC said its position had been misrepresented by US officials and clarified that its message was conditional and defensive in nature.

“What we have done is to announce our decision that in the event of an attack on power plants, Iran will retaliate by targeting the power plants of the occupying regime [Israel] and the power plants of the countries in the region that supply power to American bases,” the IRGC said. It added that Iran would also target “the economic, industrial and energy infrastructure in which the Americans are shareholders.”

In further remarks, the IRGC said Iran had not carried out attacks on civilian facilities, including hospitals, aid centres or schools, but warned that electricity infrastructure would be treated differently if targeted.

“You hit our hospital, we didn’t do that. You hit our aid centres, we didn’t do that; you hit our schools, we didn’t do that. But if you hit the electricity, we will hit the electricity,” it said.

The IRGC said it would respond to any threat in kind, framing its stance as an effort to deter further attacks.

“We are determined to respond to any threat at the same level of deterrence that it creates, and we will do so,” the statement said. “America does not know our capabilities and will see in the field.”
