COLOMBO (News 1st); US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz during a late-night phone call on Sunday, according to CNN.
Downing Street said in a statement that the two leaders agreed reopening the Strait of Hormuz was essential to ensure stability in the global energy market. The statement added that Trump and Starmer would “speak again soon.”
The call came after Trump had sharply criticised the British prime minister and other European allies for what he described as their reluctance to assist the United States militarily in its war with Iran.
Britain is one of 22 countries that have expressed a willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway that has been effectively closed since the war with Iran broke out.
Separately on Sunday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he was “absolutely convinced” that the alliance would be able to reopen the strait. Rutte said the confidential nature of the military operation meant NATO countries required time to calibrate their response.
