COLOMBO (News 1st); Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage says Sri Lanka is currently holding discussions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on placing the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket under an interim committee or an empowered official.
He said the government is pursuing the matter with urgency and confirmed that the President has directly intervened in these discussions.
The Minister noted that the government has already completed several phases of a plan aimed at uplifting cricket and securing future victories.
According to him, the government will continue implementing this plan and will not distance itself from the responsibility of developing the sport.
Gamamage stressed that it is the government’s duty to uplift cricket, adding that they will make the necessary interventions to strengthen the game and ensure its progress.
He further stated that discussions with the ICC form a part of this broader plan, as the government does not want to see Sri Lanka banned from international cricket.
He emphasized that the sport must be developed while maintaining its continuity, and said the government is preparing the structure of the new administrative framework.
“We will implement the appropriate action. This is done for the purpose of uplifting the sport, and the President is also keenly involved in this,” he added.
