COLOMBO (News 1st): The second reading debate on the Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill, which seeks to abolish the pensions of Members of Parliament, is scheduled to take place in Parliament today.
A vote on the bill is expected to be held later this afternoon.
Once this bill is passed into law, the pensions currently received by former Members of Parliament and their widows will be discontinued.
According to available information, more than 550 former MPs and their dependents are presently receiving these pension benefits.
