COLOMBO (News 1st); IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva visited areas in the Udapalatha Divisional Secretariat badly affected by the Ditwah cyclone-triggered landslides, as part of her ongoing visit to Sri Lanka.
Georgieva toured the Mawathura village, identified as one of the most severely impacted zones during the national disaster, where multiple homes were destroyed. The landslides claimed 28 lives, while six others remain missing.
During her visit, Georgieva engaged with affected residents and expressed her deep sympathies. She commended the government’s rapid relief measures implemented in response to the disaster and praised the extraordinary resilience, dedication and unity demonstrated by the community.
Addressing the children of the affected families, Georgieva said she hoped they would one day contribute significantly to the country’s future progress. She added that she believes the government will remain committed to empowering the younger generation to achieve that goal.
