Cyber Financial Crimes Surged by 23% Last Year

COLOMBO (News1st): Police report that complaints regarding financial frauds classified as cybercrimes have increased by approximately 23% over the past year.

Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F.U. Wootler, urged the public to remain highly vigilant regarding such fraudulent activities.

According to ASP Wootler, 1,528 complaints of financial crimes were recorded in 2025, leading to the arrest of 412 individuals. 

Additionally, approximately 2,000 complaints were recorded specifically regarding cyber-related financial frauds, resulting in the arrest of 318 suspects.
