COLOMBO (News 1st) - In an operation against narcotics smuggling, the Sri Lanka Navy seized two multi-day fishing trawlers and apprehended 11 suspects on the high seas south of the island.
Acting on information provided by the Sri Lanka Police, the Navy deployed Offshore Patrol Vessels and the operation resulted in the interception of a fishing trawler suspected of smuggling narcotics and the apprehension of five individuals.
A subsequent naval operation in the same region led to the seizure of another trawler, suspected of smuggling narcotics. Six more suspects and a cache of communication equipment were taken into custody during this action.
Both trawlers, the suspected narcotic haul, and all 11 suspects are now being escorted to shore for onward investigation and legal action.
They will be handed over to the relevant authorities for comprehensive investigation and legal proceedings.
