Construction of New Houses to Replace Those Damaged by Cyclone Ditwah to Commence Today

COLOMBO (News 1st); Under the Rebuilding Sri Lanka programme, the inaugural phase of the construction of new houses and the payment of compensation to replace homes that were completely damaged by Cyclone Ditwah will commence today (09) in the Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Accordingly, inaugural housing construction programmes will be held for affected communities in the areas of Galnewa, Handungama and Rajanganaya Sirimapura in the Anuradhapura District, and in Nikaweratiya, Withikuliyaya Junction and Ridigama Dodamgaslanda in the Kurunegala District.

These projects are being implemented under the Government’s programme to provide relief to people affected by the disaster situation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

According to the Disaster Management Division of the Ministry of Defence, 6,500 houses were fully destroyed due to the disasters while the number of partially damaged houses stands at 113,000.

Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, K.G. Dharmathilaka says that new houses will be constructed for families who already own land, under the first phase.
