COLOMBO (News 1st): His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, emphasized the importance of true freedom and peace in his Christmas Eve sermon at the St. Mary's Church in Kochchikade.
He stated that freedom is not about being enslaved to wealth and power, but rather about living a life of simplicity and compassion.
The Cardinal highlighted the current state of the world, where conflicts and divisions are prevalent, and urged Sri Lankans to work towards unity and harmony. He criticized the tendency to prioritize personal gain and power over the well-being of others, leading to social injustices and environmental degradation.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith reminded the congregation that Christmas is not just a festive occasion, but a call to follow the path shown by Jesus Christ, who preached love, humility, and service to the poor. He emphasized the need for individuals to reflect on their values and priorities, and to work towards creating a more just and peaceful society.
The Cardinal also referred to the recent floods and landslides in Sri Lanka, attributing them to human actions that have harmed the environment, and urged people to take responsibility for their actions and work towards sustainable development.
The sermon concluded with a call to seek forgiveness and to strive for a more compassionate and equitable society, where people can live in peace and harmony.
