172 kg of ICE Worth Rs. 1.9 Bn In Fishing Vessel

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Navy has seized over 172 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as ‘Ice’) from a multi-day fishing vessel intercepted in the southern seas. The vessel was escorted to the Dikwella harbor this (24) morning under tight security.

According to Navy officials, the narcotics were concealed in 11 sacks. Five suspects aboard the vessel were arrested during the operation.

The high-profile seizure drew the presence of senior officials, including DeputyMinister of Defence, Retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, and Inspector General of Police Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya, who visited Dikwella harbor to inspect the haul.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Minister Jayasekara praised the Navy’s long-range operations unit and intelligence teams for their meticulous planning and execution:

“This is the result of a multi-day operation carried out under the direct supervision of the Defence Ministry, Navy Intelligence, State Intelligence Service, Police, and other agencies. The seized narcotics are valued at nearly Rs. 1.9 billion.”

He further warned drug traffickers and their accomplices:

“No one involved in drug trafficking or aiding these networks will escape justice. This is a national mission. We urge everyone to stay away from these crimes. Even during disaster relief efforts, national security remains our top priority.”

The Minister also urged the public to share information on drug-related activities via the 1818 hotline, noting that recent tips have led to significant breakthroughs.
