COLOMBO (News 1st); The police constable involved in a heated confrontation with National People’s Power (NPP) Ratnapura District MP Shantha Padma Kumara has been released on bail after being produced before the Ambilipitiya Magistrate’s Court.

The officer, attached to the Sooriyakanda Police, was arrested earlier on Monday (22) on charges of unlawful obstruction and criminal intimidation following the incident that sparked political and public attention.

According to the MP’s complaint to Kolonna Police, the constable allegedly attempted to assault him while he was traveling from Kalugala to Halwinna.

Kumara claimed the officer blocked the road with his motorcycle, forced his cab to stop, and then tried to attack him.

In a twist, the constable also filed a counter-complaint, alleging that the MP and his group assaulted him and stole his motorcycle.

The bike was later recovered near the Kalugala temple road and taken into police custody.

Police confirmed that further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
