COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Education has confirmed that schools in six provinces—Western, Southern, Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, and North Central—will reopen tomorrow (December 16).

However, 147 schools in Uva, North Western, and Central provinces will remain closed due to prevailing conditions.

Breakdown of closures:

Uva Province: 26 schools
North Western Province: 6 schools
Central Province: 115 schools

Despite reopening, schools will close again on December 22 for the Christmas holidays, which will last until December 28.

Classes will resume on December 29, followed by another break from January 12 to January 20 to accommodate the Advanced Level examination, which was previously interrupted.

Nalaka Kaluwawa, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, explained:

“We will grant another school holiday from January 12 to January 20 because the Commissioner of Examinations requested these dates to complete the pending A/L papers. After that, schools will close again from February 14 to March 2 for the scheduled 2025 GCE Ordinary Level examination.”

The Ministry emphasized that these exam dates remain unchanged:

A/L Exam Completion: January second week
O/L Exam Period: February 14 to March 2, 2026

Kaluwawa added that these arrangements ensure exams proceed as planned without disrupting the academic calendar.
