COLOMBO (News 1st) -President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the need for an operational mechanism that brings together all stakeholders beyond the regular state machinery to restore public life after a disaster.
He made these remarks while attending the Kandy District Coordination Committee meeting.
Ministers, Members of Parliament representing the district, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Ministry Secretaries, and a group of state officials participated in the meeting held at the Kandy District Secretariat.
The President also focused on the damage to houses in the district and the resettlement of affected people.
Highlighting the importance of identifying cultivable lands and prioritizing their use, he inquired about the methodology for providing farmer compensation.
He further instructed officials to take immediate steps to reopen schools.
The President directed that the district’s water supply be fully restored within three days, with temporary water provision through bowsers in the meantime.
Additionally, attention was given to restoring essential services, including highways, electricity, transportation, fuel supply, irrigation, and communication systems.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake then visited the Malwathu Maha Viharaya this morning and met the Mahanayaka Thero of the Malwathu Chapter of the Siam Sect, the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero.
The President’s Media Division stated that during the meeting, the President briefed the Mahanayaka Thero on the government’s program to provide relief to those affected by the ongoing disaster situation.
