Sri Lanka’s Disaster Toll Rises: 474 Dead, 356 Missing, Over 1.58 Million Affected

COLOMBO (News 1st); The latest Situation Report from the Disaster Management Center reveals the staggering impact of the national disaster triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, with 474 confirmed deaths, 356 missing persons, and 1,586,329 people affected across 25 districts.

A total of 448,817 families have been impacted, while 40,358 houses have been fully destroyed and 971 partially damaged. Relief efforts continue as 53,758 families remain in 1,385 safety centers, sheltering 201,875 displaced individuals.

Among the hardest-hit districts:

Kandy recorded the highest death toll with 118 fatalities and 171 missing.

Badulla reported 83 deaths, 28 missing, and extensive property damage.

Kurunegala and Nuwara Eliya also suffered severe losses, with 53 and 89 deaths respectively.

Puttalam faces widespread devastation, affecting 328,050 people and claiming 29 lives.

The government, military, and international partners are working round-the-clock to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to affected communities.
