COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Irrigation says that following the continuous heavy rainfall experienced in recent days and major flood levels, minor water seepages were detected in several sections of the Kelani River flood prevention bund.
Accordingly, officers from the Kelaniya Irrigation Office, together with personnel from the Army Camp in Sapugaskanda and the Kelaniya Police, conducted an inspection of the bund, yesterday morning.
Based on their observations, sandbags were placed along vulnerable points of the embankment as a protective measure.
However, the Irrigation Department emphasizes that there is no risk or threat to the Kelani River flood prevention bund at present. They also urge the public not to be misled by unverified claims circulating on social media.
Meanwhile, the water level at the Nagalagam Street gauge had receded to 7.9 feet by 3 a.m. today.
Nevertheless, according to the data issued by the Irrigation Department at 3.30 a.m., the Kelani River at Nagalagam Street continues to remain at major flood level.
The Department of Irrigation is urging the public to refrain from visiting the Kelani River flood prevention bund, citing safety concerns.
