COLOMBO (News 1st); A humanitarian mission to deliver essential supplies to flood-affected communities ended in tragedy yesterday evening when a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Bell 212 helicopter made an emergency landing near the Lunuwila Bridge.
The helicopter, engaged in distributing dry and fresh rations to families impacted by severe flooding, was carrying five Air Force personnel, including two pilots.
With the assistance of local residents, all injured personnel were swiftly evacuated and transferred to Maravila Base Hospital for treatment.
Despite the best efforts of medical teams, Captain Pilot Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya succumbed to his injuries.
A highly experienced aviator, Wing Commander Siyambalapitiya had logged over 3,000 flying hours during his distinguished service career.
The Co-Pilot and three other crew members survived and are currently receiving medical care.
Under the directives of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, a Board of Inquiry has been appointed to investigate the incident.
