COLOMBO (News 1st); Parliament will not convene tomorrow (28) and the day after (29).
Instead, it has been decided during today’s (27) party leaders’ meeting that Parliament will sit on Monday (01) and Tuesday (02) until midnight.
Moreover, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today (27) convened a high-level meeting at the Parliamentary complex with Government and Opposition Members of Parliament and senior officials to review the emerging emergency situation and ongoing relief efforts amid worsening weather conditions.
With heavy rainfall forecast to intensify over the next two days, creating a high-risk environment, the President instructed MPs to visit their respective districts, convene District Coordination Committees and Divisional Committees, and intervene promptly to prevent loss of life and ensure timely relief for affected communities.
During the discussion, the President also directed security forces and relevant agencies to prioritize public safety and rescue operations, while ensuring the continuous provision of essential relief services, including healthcare for displaced populations.
Further attention was drawn to:
Safety and maintenance of irrigation systems
Protection of highways in landslide-prone areas
Establishing a compensation mechanism for damaged houses and farmlands
Addressing challenges in continuing educational activities, including the conduct of the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination
The President emphasized that swift, coordinated action is critical to safeguard lives and restore normalcy.
