COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is on the brink of a severe weather condition as the low-pressure system hovering near the island has intensified into a depression and is expected to strengthen further into a deep depression within the next 12 hours.

Meteorologists warn that this system will unleash relentless rain and destructive winds, threatening lives and property across the country.

According to the Department of Meteorology, North Central, North Western, and Trincomalee Districts could be battered by over 200 millimeters of rain today, while Northern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and Western Provinces, along with Galle, Matara, and Batticaloa, may experience rainfall exceeding 150 millimeters.

Even the remaining regions are forecast to receive more than 100 millimeters, making flooding and landslides almost inevitable.

The danger doesn’t stop at rain. Winds reaching 60 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected to sweep across the island.

These extreme weather patterns are likely to persist until November 30.
