COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo marked a historic milestone on World Fisheries Day as Sri Lanka became the first country in South Asia to initiate the development of a National Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries, reaffirming its leadership in sustainable marine resource management.
Speaking at the international workshop, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath highlighted the deep bond between the island nation and its oceans:
"Throughout our history, the sea has been both a provider and a protector. It has nourished our people, sustained our livelihoods, and connected our island to the wider world."
The plan aims to uplift over 80% of Sri Lanka’s fishing community, empowering coastal families while preserving marine resources for future generations.
"The national plan of action for small-scale fisheries symbolizes Sri Lanka's leadership in sustainable development," Herath said. "The ocean has given much to Sri Lanka. It is now our duty to give back—through stewardship, partnership, and a vision for a sustainable tomorrow."
The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Fisheries, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Bay of Bengal Programme Intergovernmental Organization, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
