COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s aquaculture sector entered a new era with the launch of the Shrimp Industry Information System (SIIS)—the country’s first integrated digital platform designed to modernize shrimp farming through technology and biosecurity.

The initiative, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA), is part of the FAO-driven project “Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture through Effective Biosecurity and Digital Technology”, funded by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

SIIS creates a unified digital ecosystem connecting farmers, laboratories, regulators, and policymakers through real-time data and analytics. Leveraging Big Data, IoT, AI, and early-warning systems, the platform enables proactive disease management, food safety, and traceability.

Accessible via mobile and web applications, SIIS allows farmers to monitor water quality, report diseases, and receive automated alerts. It also supports digital licensing, GIS-based mapping, and national-level visibility, strengthening regulatory oversight and evidence-based policy planning.

The Republic of Korea’s Ambassador, Miyon Lee, praised the initiative as a model for digital transformation in sustainable aquaculture, while

The launch event brought together government officials, FAO representatives, Korean diplomats, shrimp farmers, and private sector partners, positioning Sri Lanka as a regional leader in smart aquaculture and sustainable food production.
