COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the remand of Ayiyanap Pillai Mubarak, Chairman of the Kuchchaveli Pradeshiya Sabha and member of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, until November 28 in connection with a bribery investigation.
The order was issued by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama when the suspect was produced before court. Mubarak is accused of accepting a Rs. 500,000 bribe to prepare a land permit for property belonging to an individual who had migrated during the war and was scheduled to return to Sri Lanka.
President’s Counsel Anil Silva, appearing for the suspect, requested bail, which the magistrate rejected.
However, the suspect’s driver was released on bail, secured by two sureties of Rs. 1 million each.
The court also imposed a foreign travel ban on Mubarak.
The Bribery Commission arrested the suspects on October 31 following investigations into the alleged transaction.
