COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have officially released video footage capturing the arrest of Ishara Sewwandi in Nepal, marking a significant moment in the high-profile investigation into the courtroom assassination of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
The video, now circulating across media platforms, shows the dramatic capture of Sewwandi, who had been on the run for nearly eight months.
She was arrested on October 14 in a covert operation conducted by Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in collaboration with Nepalese law enforcement.
Sewwandi, who allegedly played a central role in smuggling a firearm into the Aluthkade Court Complex on February 19, is believed to have disguised herself as a lawyer to help the gunman gain access to the courtroom.
The weapon, hidden inside a law book, was reportedly handed over to the shooter moments before the fatal attack on Sanjeewa.
The newly released footage shows Sewwandi being apprehended in an area of Nepal, where she had been hiding under a false identity.
She was found on the top floor of a high-rise building, along with several accomplices, including individuals believed to have aided her escape from Sri Lanka.
Authorities say she fled the country by boat to India, then traveled overland to Nepal, spending over Rs. 6.5 million during her escape.
