COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Meteorology has warned that certain areas of Sri Lanka could experience rainfall exceeding 100mm after 1:00 p.m. today, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Director of Forecasting Merril Mendis stated that most parts of the island are likely to receive heavy showers this afternoon due to the prevailing Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and atmospheric disturbances.

According to the advisory, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, Uva, and North-Western Provinces are at risk of intense rainfall.

The department has issued a severe weather warning, cautioning the public about possible strong winds and lightning strikes.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has issued landslide warnings for seven districts tonight, including Galle, Gampaha, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, and Monaragala, covering several Divisional Secretariat divisions.

Assistant Director of the DMC Pradeep Kodippili urged residents in hilly areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to minimize risks from landslides.
