COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Agriculture states that a program is currently underway for the purchase of big onions.

Deputy Minister Namal Karunarathna announced that big onions will be purchased at a rate of Rs. 130 per kilogram. He added that the purchases will be carried out through Sathosa, the Dambulla Economic Centre, and selected private sector institutions.

Harvesting is currently in progress in several areas, including Dambulla, Galewela, Bakamuna, Naula, Sigiriya, and Galgiriyaagama.

Meanwhile, a group of big onion farmers staged a protest in the town of Bakamuna yesterday, demanding a fair price for their produce. They claim the current prices offered are inadequate and do not meet their production costs.
