COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s university system came to a standstill today (30) as the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) launched a one-day islandwide strike, demanding urgent solutions to long-standing grievances.
The trade union action, which affects all state universities, was called in protest against severe academic staff shortages, salary disparities, and cuts to allowances.
FUTA stated that despite multiple rounds of discussions with authorities, no meaningful solutions have been offered, leaving lecturers with no choice but to escalate their demands.
According to the union, the strike is a warning shot, signaling growing frustration within the academic community.
