COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police said that it seized a massive consignment of illegal drugs in Tangalle, with an estimated street value nearing Rs. 10 billion, marking one of the largest narcotics busts in Sri Lankan history.
The haul, weighing a total of 705 kilograms and 140 grams, includes 284 kilograms and 410 grams of heroin and 420 kilograms and 760 grams of crystal methamphetamine (‘ice’).
The drugs were discovered concealed in three lorries parked in the Seenimodara and Kadurupokuna areas of Tangalle.
The operation was led by the Tangalle Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit and the Tangalle Headquarters Police Inspector, who are now spearheading a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The case took a grim turn when two bodies were found yesterday (22) morning at a house in Sinimodara, while a third individual died after being admitted to hospital.
Subsequent police inquiries led to the discovery of the massive drug stockpile.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the origins of the drugs, the extent of the trafficking network, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Police say further inquiries are ongoing.
