COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has revealed that certain Members of Parliament have allegedly received regular payments from organized criminal networks, disguised as monthly tax collections—a revelation that underscores the depth of criminal infiltration into Sri Lanka’s political system.
The President described the existence of a “shadow state”—a parallel system of power that mimics the official government but is controlled by organized crime syndicates.
“This underground state thrives on violence, drug trafficking, intimidation, and threats against businesspeople. It is a deeply rooted social menace,” he said.
President Dissanayake emphasized that nearly 50% of the country’s drug network and around 75% of armed criminal gangs are already under investigation or in custody.
He warned that these groups have infiltrated legitimate institutions, including political offices, with some MPs and ministers allegedly receiving cash payments at their homes.
“This is the reality: organized crime has created a parallel system of power in our country. We are taking action to dismantle it,” he declared.
The President expressed full confidence in the Sri Lanka Police and relevant enforcement agencies, thanking them for their commitment and expressing trust in their ability to carry out this mission with integrity.
He also outlined his administration’s political vision, stating: “We are building a new political authority—one that does not steal or waste a single cent of public money.”
However, he acknowledged that remnants of the old corrupt system still exist within the state machinery.
“To those individuals, we say: you have a choice. You can adapt to the new political culture. If you refuse, you are free to step aside. If you don’t step aside, we will remove you,” he warned.
