COLOMBO (News 1st); A breakthrough in Sri Lanka’s fight against organized crime has emerged following the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect in Panadura, believed to be linked to a large-scale ice drug distribution network.
According to police sources, the suspect—identified as a resident of Wellawaya—was apprehended during a raid conducted by officers from the Kalutara Crimes Division.
The arrest was made in connection with over 10 kilograms of ice (methamphetamine) allegedly produced at a facility in Hambantota and supplied to a notorious organized criminal figure known as Kehelbaddara Padme.
The suspect, who is reportedly an associate of Suranga, another known organized criminal previously taken into custody, was interrogated following his arrest.
Crucial information regarding the drug production and distribution network was revealed during questioning.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect was presented before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court and granted a seven-day detention order for further interrogation.
In a related development, police discovered 15 cans—each containing four liters—of suspicious chemical substances believed to be used in the production of ice drugs.
Additionally, filter papers were found at the scene, possibly used in the drug processing or packaging.
Investigations have also revealed that the premises used for the drug manufacturing operation were rented within a housing complex in Hambantota.
