COLOMBO (News 1st); The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has issued a stern warning to vendors selling bottled drinking water at inflated prices, stating that legal action will be taken against violators.
CAA Chairman Hemanta Samarakoon emphasized that certain businesses—particularly those operating under tourism board approvals or other institutional licenses—have been found selling chilled bottled water at prices exceeding the regulated amount.
He clarified that no entity is legally permitted to sell bottled water above the government-approved retail price, regardless of refrigeration or branding.
“This practice is illegal,” Samarasekara said. “We urge all vendors to strictly adhere to the regulated pricing. Selling bottled water at higher prices, even if chilled or branded differently, is a violation of consumer protection laws.”
He added that if vendors fail to comply, the Authority will initiate legal proceedings without hesitation.
