COLOMBO (News 1st): The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) says that plastic debris from the MSC Elsa 3 ship, which sank off the coast of India, continues to wash up along Sri Lanka’s coastline.
MEPA stated that cleanup efforts are underway on beaches in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Puttalam, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, and Galle districts.
The authority added, The cleanup has been underway since July 13, with more than 5,500 civilians taking part.
The Liberian-flagged MSC Elsa 3 sank 38 nautical miles off the coast of Kerala, India, after a water leak. At the time, the cargo ship was carrying 643 containers.
