COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, commended the Sri Lankan Government for its constructive and collaborative approach in negotiating a fair, balanced, and reciprocal trade relationship with the United States.

Ambassador Chung was hosted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce for a courtesy visit, where she met with the Chamber’s leadership to discuss avenues for deepening economic cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, Ambassador Chung emphasized the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with the Ceylon Chamber, recognizing its role as the premier representative of Sri Lanka’s private sector.

The discussions focused on expanding trade and investment opportunities, with particular attention to Sri Lanka’s strategic position in regional commerce. Ambassador Chung noted that many U.S. companies are increasingly considering South Asia for business expansion, with Sri Lanka emerging as a top contender.

She urged Sri Lanka to capitalize on this momentum by enhancing trade facilitation, reducing non-tariff barriers, and improving competitiveness to attract more U.S. investment.

Tourism was also highlighted as a sector with strong growth potential. Both parties agreed on the importance of infrastructure development to support increased tourism inflows and unlock new economic opportunities.
