COLOMBO (News 1st); A coalition of Sri Lanka’s opposition political parties has come together to form a new initiative titled the National Movement to Protect Palestine, aimed at voicing solidarity with the Palestinian people and challenging the current government's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Speaking at the launch, MP Mujibur Rahuman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya criticized the government’s diminishing commitment to the Palestinian cause, stating that while it once stood in support of Palestinian independence, its current actions — including visa-free entry for Israeli tourists — contradict that position.

“At a time when the world is distancing itself from Israel, our government is opening its doors,” he said.

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem echoed these concerns, alleging that Israeli nationals are operating businesses in Sri Lanka in violation of local laws, with the government turning a blind eye. “This administration is clearly aligning with Western interests, particularly those of the United States,” he added.
