High-Risk Drug Zones Identified in Colombo District

COLOMBO(News 1st): Several areas within the Colombo District have been designated as high-risk zones for drug abuse, according to data released by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board.

The identified areas include Obesekarapura and Bandaranayakapura - Rajagiriya, Wellampitiya – Kolonnawa, Wanathamulla - Borella, Lunawa - Moratuwa , and Mattakkuliya - Modara.

In response, the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board has launched a special program aimed at identifying drug addicts within these areas.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Police, the Police Special Task Force, multiple state institutions, and Clean Sri Lanka innitative.

According to the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, people identified as drug users will be directed towards rehabilitation through a community-based treatment approach.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Security has announced the commencement of a parallel program through community safety committees to assist in the identification process.

The Board further noted a sharp increase in the use of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "ICE."

In the past year alone, 68,192 suspects have been arrested in connection with the use of the drug "ICE".
