COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to revise the group insurance coverage provided to Members of Parliament, reducing the annual coverage limit from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 250,000.
The initial insurance scheme, approved on May 15, 2023, granted each MP coverage of up to Rs. 1 million per parliamentary year. This policy had been in effect throughout the previous term.
However, in a move aimed at rationalizing public expenditure, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake proposed during the presentation of the 2025 national budget that the coverage be scaled down to Rs. 250,000 per MP.
Following this recommendation, the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs submitted a formal proposal to the Cabinet, which has now received approval.
