A discussion took place this evening between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the head of the US Trade Representative to explore ways to further reduce the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath said that the government is continuing its talks with the US on lowering these tariffs.

The Minister shared these views while taking part in a global conference of Sri Lankan businesspeople living overseas, held in Colombo today.

The event took place under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Speaking at the conference, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath mentioned that, relevant authorities are taking all necessary steps to address the new tariffs imposed by the United States. He further stated that the President would engage in a Zoom discussion with the head of the USTR at 5.45pm today to explore further reductions.

Minister further stated that although the newly imposed tariffs have successfully brought the initial 44% tariff down to 30%, it still remains a substantial burden and reiterated that the country is continuing efforts to negotiate a more favorable outcome.
