AKD Nominates Justice Surasena For Chief Justice

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has nominated Supreme Court Judge P. Padman Surasena to the Constitutional Council for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.

The announcement was confirmed by Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who stated that the President had formally submitted Justice Surasena’s name for consideration.

This development comes as Chief Justice Murdhu Fernando prepares to retire on July 27, marking the end of her tenure at the helm of the judiciary.

Questions have emerged regarding judicial seniority, with some pointing out that Justice Nawaz is currently the most senior judge on the Supreme Court bench.

Responding to the concerns, Dr. Jayatissa emphasized that Justice Surasena is a respected and experienced figure in the judiciary, having served the legal system for many years. He added that the President had carefully considered all relevant factors before making the nomination.
