Sri Lanka Pushes for U.S. Tariff Cuts in Crucial Virtual Talks

COLOMBO (News 1st); A fresh round of discussions between U.S. officials and a Sri Lankan delegation regarding American tariff regulations is scheduled to take place today (18).

According to Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, the meeting will be held virtually via Zoom.

This dialogue follows the recent initiation of a process aimed at further reducing the 30% tariff currently imposed by the United States on Sri Lankan exports.

Dr. Fernando noted that a significant exchange of data has already taken place between the two parties under this initiative.

Friday’s meeting will feature a Sri Lankan delegation led by Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance.

The discussion is being coordinated by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the United States,.

He further stated that the government hopes to successfully conclude negotiations for a trade agreement between Sri Lanka and the United States before the first of next month.
