COLOMBO (News 1st): Rehan Jayawickreme, of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya, has called on his party to reflect and reform if it hopes to regain public support and win future elections.
Speaking on News 1st's Talk of the Town, Jayawickreme admitted public support for the SJB has declined due to a departure from its founding principles.
“Yes it’s clear we’ve strayed. The people see it. If we don’t start listening, history will dump us into the political garbage.”
A founding member of the SJB who left the UNP over what he described as dictatorial leadership, Jayawickreme expressed concern that the SJB is beginning to mirror the very mistakes it once opposed.
“We built this party for change. If we’re just repeating the past, what’s the point?”
“If I’m expelled for speaking the truth, so be it. I’d rather that than be remembered as a failed politician who stayed silent.”
His comments come as the SJB considers its next steps ahead of upcoming elections, with growing calls from within and outside the party for a new direction.
