COLOMBO (News 1st); Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has dismissed rumors of an impending fuel shortage in Sri Lanka, urging the public not to panic or engage in unnecessary fuel hoarding.
Speaking at a media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa addressed concerns that emerged on social media following reports of escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. “Some areas have seen panic buying due to misinformation. But there is absolutely no need for alarm,” he said.
He confirmed that Sri Lanka currently holds sufficient fuel reserves to meet national demand for the next two and a half months. “We have 160,000 metric tons of crude oil in storage, and another 90,000 metric tons are expected within the next two weeks,” he stated.
Additionally, under long-term agreements, four more oil tankers have been ordered. These include:
246,200 metric tons of Octane 92
5,000 metric tons of Octane 95
103,250 metric tons of Lanka Auto Diesel
10,500 metric tons of Lanka Super Diesel
Dr. Jayatissa emphasized that both the Ministry of Power and Energy and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation have confirmed the availability of these reserves. “There is no need to stockpile fuel at home. The government is actively managing supply to ensure uninterrupted distribution,” he added.
He urged the public to remain calm and avoid contributing to unnecessary social disruption by reacting to unverified claims.
