CID Launches Nationwide Probe into Controversial Presidential Pardons

COLOMBO (News 1st) - 28 teams from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have been deployed to all prisons across the island. 

The operation is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that presidential pardon was illegally used to release inmates.

Police say that these CID teams are investigating several documents within the prison facilities.

The investigation comes amidst significant controversy surrounding the release of inmates who were not included in the official list of prisoners granted a presidential pardon on Vesak Poya Day from the Anuradhapura Prison.

Accordingly, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya was arrested and remanded until the 25th of this month in this regard. 

Anuradhapura Prison Superintendent Mohan Karunaratne who was also arrested in connection with the same incident, has been further remanded until tomorrow.
