Poson Week Begins with Full State Sponsorship and Enhanced Security Measures

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Poson Week officially begins today and will continue until June 13.

Liquor stores in the Anuradhapura district will remain closed throughout the period.

This year’s National Poson Festival, themed “Let the world be enlightened by the teachings of the Buddha,” is being held with full state sponsorship. 

A series of religious and cultural events have been organized across key historic sites including Anuradhapura, Mihintale, and Thanthirimale.

Ranjith Wimalasuriya, Chairman of the Poson Festival Committee and Anuradhapura District Secretary, confirmed that all necessary facilities have been arranged to accommodate the large influx of devotees attending the 2333rd National Poson Festival. 

He also said that a free train service is operating between Anuradhapura and Mihintale to facilitate travel for pilgrims.

Wimalasuriya urged devotees to refrain from bringing polythene and plastic items.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a comprehensive security program, particularly around Mihintale and the Atamasthana, with 8,000 officers deployed for security, traffic regulation, and lifeguard duties.
