COLOMBO (News 1st); On May 22, Sri Lanka Police uncovered a massive stash of heroin—suspected to weigh over 101 kilograms—hidden behind a bakery in the Atuboda area of Weeraketiya. The discovery was made following a tip-off received by the Police Special Task Force.

The narcotics, which were neatly packed in multiple parcels, were found concealed behind the bakery premises.

Two individuals present at the scene were immediately taken into custody. One of the suspects is the owner of the bakery, while the other is an employee.

According to police, the bakery owner claimed that the heroin was handed over to him approximately a week and a half ago by a friend who arrived in a small lorry.

Investigations have since revealed that the heroin had been cleverly hidden inside the inner lining of the lorry’s cargo area, beneath the upholstery.

“The heroin was discreetly packed and transported in a small truck. Once delivered, it was transferred into bags and hidden at the bakery premises. The lorry has since left the area, and we are currently investigating its whereabouts,” said Deputy Inspector General Nishantha Soysa.

The heroin has been sent to the Government Analyst for further verification.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson & Senior Superintendent of Police, Buddhika Manatunga, stated that this seizure adds to a growing list of successful operations.

“In the past five months alone, Sri Lanka Police have seized over 403 kilograms of heroin, including this latest haul,” he said.

The two suspects are scheduled to be presented before the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court on Friday (23).
