COLOMBO (News 1st); Deputy Solicitor General Yohan Abeywickrama informed the Matara Magistrate’s Court that the Attorney General is prepared to initiate legal proceedings against suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon over allegations of contempt of court.
This development follows the completion of an investigative file concerning Tennakoon’s conduct after being granted bail in connection with a high-profile shooting incident at the W15 Hotel in Weligama, Matara.
The case was taken up again before Matara Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa on May 22.
On April 25, Magistrate Buddhadasa raised concerns about whether Tennakoon’s actions following his release on bail constituted contempt of court.
The Magistrate emphasized that his court lacked the jurisdiction to pursue contempt proceedings and referred the matter to the Attorney General for further action.
The allegations stem from an incident in which Tennakoon was reportedly escorted out of the court premises in a vehicle by an individual identified as Roshan Lakshitha, shortly after being granted bail.
Both individuals now face potential legal action for allegedly violating court orders and undermining the authority of the judiciary.
Tennakoon and seven other suspects connected to the W15 Hotel shooting appeared in court on Thursday (22). After reviewing the case, Magistrate Buddhadasa scheduled the next hearing for October 10 at 10:00 a.m.
