Government Moves to Fast-Track Cybersecurity Bill; Plans to Establish Cybersecurity Authority

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Digital Economy has announced that necessary steps are being taken to swiftly pass the proposed Cybersecurity Bill in Sri Lanka.

Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne stated that the bill includes provisions to establish a dedicated Cybersecurity Authority, which will be responsible for introducing and enforcing regulations related to national cybersecurity.

He further explained that the proposed authority will develop a comprehensive legal framework to manage and monitor cybersecurity efforts, ensuring robust protection against digital threats.

In addition to regulation, the new law will also facilitate 24/7 cybersecurity monitoring, strengthening the country’s ability to detect and respond to cyber incidents in real time.

The bill also outlines responsibilities related to the design and maintenance of government websites, including offering guidelines on cybersecurity and ensuring compliance with those standards.

The draft legislation is currently under review at the Department of Legal Draftsman, and the government is prioritizing its approval to enhance national digital security infrastructure.
