COLOMBO (News 1st): The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the son of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Ramith Rambukwella, to appear before the Bribery Commission tomorrow (May 21) to provide a statement in connection with a corruption case involving the alleged misuse of over Rs. 8 million in public funds.
The directive was issued by Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali during a court session where the former minister, currently in remand custody, was presented once again.
The case stems from allegations that during his tenure as Minister of Mass Media, Health, and Environment in 2021–2023, Keheliya Rambukwella appointed several close associates to his personal staff and unlawfully obtained allowances on their behalf.
Investigations by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) revealed that these actions caused a financial loss exceeding Rs. 8 million to the state.
Ramith Rambukwella has been named the second suspect in the case.
According to CIABOC, he was previously notified multiple times to appear before the Commission but failed to comply, citing reasons such as leaving Colombo and being hospitalized.
CIABOC’s legal team, led by Assistant Director Thushitha Jayanetti, informed the court that over 20 witnesses are yet to provide statements and expressed concern that releasing the suspects on bail could lead to witness intimidation. They also noted that the former minister had allegedly attempted to influence witnesses during his time in office.
In response, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, appearing for the defense, argued that his client had not interfered with any witnesses and requested bail.
After considering both sides, the Chief Magistrate ruled that granting bail could obstruct ongoing investigations and witness testimonies. As a result, Keheliya Rambukwella will remain in remand custody until June 3.
