COLOMBO (News 1st); Two suspects have been arrested at Katunayake International Airport by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while attempting to smuggle in a large consignment of gold valued at approximately Rs. 210 million.
According to the CID, the suspects had arrived from the United Arab Emirates and had concealed the gold within vehicle spare parts to evade detection.
Authorities recovered 6.6 kilograms of gold and three additional gold pieces during the operation.
The arrested individuals are residents of Grandpass, Colombo, and Kandy, aged 26 and 46, respectively.
The CID has since handed over both the suspects and the seized gold to Sri Lanka Customs for further investigation and legal proceedings.
