Kerala cannabis valued over Rs. 87 million seized in Pesalai

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Sri Lanka Navy says that a search operation conducted by the personnel of SLNS Gajaba in the North Central Naval Command in the Pesalai beach area of Mannar yesterday, resulted in the seizure of approximately 218kg of Kerala cannabis. 

The operation also led to the apprehension of a dinghy (01) in connection to the smuggling racket.

In the operation, naval personnel searched a suspicious dinghy in Pesalai beach area and recovered approximately 218kg of Kerala cannabis in 08 sacks. 

According to the Sri Lanka Navy, the gross street value of the stock of the Kerala cannabis seized in this operation is believed to exceed Rs. 87 million. 

It is suspected that smugglers likely left behind the consignment due to the persistent presence of the Navy in the area.

The Sri Lanka Navy said that Kerala cannabis and the dinghy will be handed over to the Pesalai Police for legal action.
