COLOMBO (News 1st); Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Renuka Jayasundara of the Sri Lanka Police has revealed alarming statistics on sexual harassment and domestic violence in the country.

Speaking in Colombo DIG Jayasundara highlighted that rape remains the highest reported crime in Sri Lanka, with 2,252 cases of sexual harassment against women reported in 2023.

DIG Jayasundara detailed the locations where these incidents occurred, noting that the majority took place in-house premises (1,420 cases), followed by public transport (261 cases), online platforms (192 cases), roads (117 cases), workplaces (41 cases), schools and classes (20 cases), religious places (9 cases), and other locations (192 cases).

She emphasized that these figures likely underrepresent the true extent of the problem due to underreporting.

In addition to sexual harassment, domestic violence remains a significant issue, with 130,000 complaints received annually.

DIG Jayasundare assured the public that the police are committed to conducting thorough investigations and providing support to victims of sexual harassment and domestic violence.
