COLOMBO (News 1st); SLPP Member of Parliament Mahindananda Aluthgamage expressed his support for Ranil Wickremesinghe as the ideal candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Aluthgamage highlighted Wickremesinghe's maturity, international experience, and decisive actions as key strengths that make him a suitable choice to lead the country.
"The SLPP will soon reach a policy-based decision," Aluthgamage stated. "Ranil Wickremesinghe will be named as the Presidential Candidate, and all political parties will unite behind the new alliance formed with him."
Aluthgamage also revealed information about a potential crossover from the SJB.
According to him, SJB leader Sajith Premadasa cannot prevent party chairman Sarath Fonseka from resigning or health minister Rajitha Senaratne from leaving the party. He predicted that more party members, including senior leaders, would join the government's program in the coming days.
When asked about the President's efforts to sway SJB members, Aluthgamage downplayed the impact, stating, "There have been minor changes so far. Major shifts will occur over time. Since the President hasn't officially announced his candidacy, there's no cause for concern."
Regarding the possibility of the SLPP backing Dhammika Perera, Aluthgamage clarified that no decision had been made yet.
Aluthgamage firmly denied any intention of joining the United National Party. He emphasized that the President was running as an independent candidate, and discussions led by Basil Rajapaksa and President Ranil Wickremesinghe would determine the common candidate supported by all political parties.
Aluthgamage asserted that the SLPP would not compromise its principles for financial gain.
